About Me
I was born on June 11 1949, in Karachi, Pakistan. At the age of 18,
I joined the business of my father in a Pan Shop, selling a number of
items including a very popular tobacco product.
After diagnosis of larynx cancer in 2001, I had a total Laryngectomee
and radiation treatments. Many difficult problems arose, and I had to
learn to speak with an electro-larynx device.
Now I am very active in education and tobacco awareness in Pakistan
and I have been an active member of the International Association of
Laryngectomees, making connections all across the world.
"In our part of the world, I had not been in contact nor knew
about any Rehabilitation Care Centers for Laryngectomees that could
help answer my questions about what needed to be done or how or when
to do it. There was also not a support group or caregiver that could
be contacted.
However, during this period, I had attended two conferences for Head
and Neck Cancer at Aga Khan Hospital University, http://ww.edu, most
of which passed over my head. However, the question and answer session
provided some information. A later search on the Internet provided too
much information for me.
I shared this information with my ENT doctor, Professor Mubasher Ikram,
and he appreciated it. I then discussed the possibility of forming a
support group/club association for Laryngectomees who would all be starting
a new life without voice.
I am now working on that and collecting more and more information
from different Internet sources. Hopefully I will succeed as this will
require teamwork between Laryngectomees as well as with an ENT professor,
surgeon, radiotherapist, chemotherapist, and all others who might work
with Laryngectomees."
